Jord Wood Watches Review and Giveaway!

I’ve always been a fan of fun accessories and jewelry, and my fall and winter wardrobes include both to add a little extra something to the neutrals and layers that I wear so often when the weather turns colder. Scarves, bracelets, earrings and watches especially make me feel pulled together and add some color or sparkle to all of my gray and black clothing. I was recently contacted to try a brand of watches that I was not so familiar with but are beautiful and unique, and I’m really excited to be able to give one of you a chance to win your own.

Jord Wood Watches are gorgeous, high quality, stylish watches made out of (you guessed it) wood! I have the Fieldcrest watch in black, and not only does it go with everything in my wardrobe, but it’s fun, very lightweight, and has just enough flash to dress up or down.

I like to stack bracelets and watches, especially in the colder months when I’m all covered up in layers, and this one goes perfectly with my simple and more elaborate bangles and cuffs.

I used the Fieldcrest watch to dress up my “last day of holiday travel” ensemble (skinny jeans, black booties, a long sleeve black t-shirt and a scarf thrown on to add a pop of color), and I think the super cute accessories take some of the attention off of the second-day hair and lack of sleep look I was sporting.

I added the watch and bracelets to an already-dressed-up look, too, with a sheer black and white top, a pair of teal boyfriend trousers and the same black booties.

The Truth About Invisalign for Teens

This post was sponsored by the folks at Invisalign, but all opinions and genuine interest are my own! (I’m saving my pennies to get them for myself!)

I went to the Blogher blogging conference this summer, and I had the chance to speak with several great companies. One of them, Invisalign, hosted a daytime cocktail party and invited a local-to-California orthodontist to come speak about what Invisalign had to offer as an alternative to traditional metal braces, not just for adults, but pre-teens and teens as well.

Most of us have heard of the clear plastic teeth-straightening devices, but I didn’t, and maybe you don’t, know the specifics of how they work, why they work, and who makes great candidates for the system. In fact, I learned how and why Invisalign for teens is an effective, popular option.

A lot of moms at the party were concerned about the fact that, like a retainer, you remove the nearly-invisable plastic Invisalign aligners when you eat (it’s recommended that you where them 21 hours every day). They weren’t sure if their tweens and teens would be responsible enough to not lose them.

But, the orthodontist had a couple of good points: one is that you change sets every two weeks, so if you lose one close to that two week mark, you’re probably fine to go ahead and start using the next set. Two, when you get the sets from your orthodontist, you get extras…six free replacement aligners.

And you get several sets at a time, so every two weeks, you change to the next set without having to go back to the orthodontist for an adjustment. The moms that were at the party whose kids had been wearing Invisalign said that they didn’t have any trouble with their teens losing or forgetting to wear the aligners, however. And I believe it…my 7 and 8 year olds recently got glasses, and they been good already about remembering to wear them. I think that when kids know how important something is, they really step up to the plate, given the chance. And they learn to be more responsible in the process.

Not every orthodontist recommends or uses Invisalign regularly, but you can get online and find one close to you that does if you’re interested in a consultation or learning more.

Invisalign for teens: Invisalign compared to braces

Here are some myths about Invisalign and the truth behind them:

Myth: I won’t be able to tell if my child is wearing Invisalign often enough for it to be effective.

Setting it Straight:  Invisalign Teen aligners are made with small blue dots, officially called compliance indicators, that gradually fade as aligners are worn. It’s a quick visual check for parents and teens to confirm they wearing aligners long enough to get results. In fact, clinical data from orthodontists confirms that teens wear their aligners an average of 21 hours per day, just as recommended.

Myth: If my child loses their aligners, it’s going to cost me an arm and a leg to replace.

Setting it Straight: We know kids lose things, even their aligners! That’s why you get up to six FREE replacement aligners with Invisalign Teen.

Myth: After Invisalign Teen, my child’s teeth may revert back to their original position.

Setting it Straight:  Studies show that without retainers straight teeth can gradually shift back towards their initial position. This is a common occurrence with all orthodontic treatment including braces, but is one that can easily be overcome. Ask your doctor. about Vivera retainers from the makers of Invisalign.

Myth: I don’t need to take my child to see an orthodontist until they are a teenager.

Setting it Straight: The American Association of Orthodontics recommends taking children for their first orthodontic check-up no later than age 7.  The American Dental Association says this is because, “Your child’s dentist can spot problems with emerging teeth and jaw growth early on, while the primary teeth are present.”

Myth: Invisalign takes longer to complete than braces.

Setting it Straight: The length of Invisalign treatment is comparable to braces. The average Invisalign journey averages about 12 months for adults. The length of treatment time for teens may vary depending on the severity of the case and can only be determined by a doctor.

Myth: If my child’s dentist or orthodontist recommends braces over Invisalign, I should trust their opinion.

Not all orthodontists specialize in Invisalign Teen. Visit www.invisalign.com and select “find a doctor” to locate experienced Invisalign and Invisalign Teen doctors in your area. If you are told your teen is not an Invisalign candidate, it may be worth getting a second opinion from more than one orthodontist. Doing so may help ensure that you have all the information you need to make an educated decision.

Myth: Braces work better than Invisalign.

Setting it Straight:  Invisalign Teen was developed with leading orthodontists to correct the most common teeth straightening issues – from severe cases to more minor, cosmetic adjustments.  Invisalign Teen’s clear aligners are removable and can straighten teeth without a mouth full of metal and all the disruption and sacrifice that comes with it.  With Invisalign, teens look better and feel more confident than they ever could in traditional braces.

Myth: We can’t afford Invisalign.

Setting it Straight:  Invisalign Teen is covered by many dental insurance policies just like traditional braces — up to 50% of the cost may be covered by insurance. Even if dental insurance doesn’t apply, many doctors will help parents find options to make straightening their child’s teeth more affordable. Many offer flexible and affordable monthly finance plans that can be as low as $99 per month.

Invisalign Teen clear aligners straighten teeth without traditional wires and brackets giving teens the confidence to live life to the fullest while improving their smile.  Visit the Invisalign website for more information.

You can find out a ton of information on the Invisalign website, including FAQs, finding a doctor in your area, how it works, and if you or your teen would be a good candidate for the system.

The Best Summer Crafts and Activities For Kids

Summer is right around the corner! For a work at home mom, that can mean a lot less time to get actual work done because the school-aged kids are home all day. Not to mention all of the sports, lessons, trips, camps, etc that you have to schedule your work around. It’s not easy to do, and work can slow down during the long, lazy days of summer, but it doesn’t have to stop! I’ve compiled a round-up of the best summer crafts and activities for kids to do when they’re home, so you can be productive.

Best Summer Activities and Crafts for Kids

Lydia of Cluttered Genius already shared her favorite YouTube channels for toddlers and preschoolers, and she also has a list of the best apps for them. Because sometimes, a little screen time is the best way to get things done.

A Busy Box is a brilliant idea for the little ones, especially if you save it for only when you’re working. Tuck one away when you need 30 minutes or an hour to get work done, and because it’s not an every day thing, it will be way more exciting for the kids. See Vanessa Craft has a list of Busy Bag Ideas for toddlers, and the same idea can be used for older kids…find crafts or art projects that are reserved for “busy time” and need little supervision…a special LEGO set (you can purchase several small ones and hand them out one at a time), a loom bracelet kit, water colors, kinetic sand (a big favorite around here), playfoam (fun for preschool and early elementary-aged kids, and so much less messy than play dough, plus it’s gluten free), special coloring books and crayons or markers. Fill a large tote or basket with these items, and allow your child (children) to choose one thing to work on at any given day.

Best summer activities and crafts for kids

Along the same lines of the busy box, special toys can be saved for “mama’s work time.” A box of dolls and doll clothes, a race track with extra cool race cars, a train track and trains, a box of puzzles, magnetic dress-up dolls, a toy kitchen, a set of dress up clothes. Keep these in a closet, your office, or the garage, out of sight, and it’ll be like Christmas any time you bring one out.

Set up an outdoor work station, if possible. You can make phone calls, hand write in a notebook (or type on a laptop or tablet) blog posts, organize boxes of inventory, or do other tasks while you keep an eye on your children in a sandbox, on a trampoline, or even in a backyard pool (with older kids), all from a porch or deck or spot in the yard.

Pinterest has a ton of crafts and summer activities for kids as well. Again, the key is to find things that the kids can do with supervision but little actual help from you, so you can work!

When all else fails, fill your living room with blown-up balloons or huge cardboard boxes, and let the kids at them!

What are your favorite summer crafts and activities for kids?

Product links are Amazon affiliate links, which means that you can work your business in the summertime, and I can, too!

Smile Brilliant LED Teeth Whitening System Review and #Giveaway

I’m always wishing my teeth were whiter (I mean, who doesn’t unless you spend a load of money on professional whitening regularly?). The drugstore strips and polishes always work okay, but they’re kind of a hassle and nothing compared to getting a (pricey) kit from the dentist.

I was excited to try the Smile Brilliant LED Teeth Whitening kit, because it comes with an LED light, just like the dentists use, to accelerate the whitening process and bring it up a notch.

Smile Brilliant LED Teeth Whitening giveaway and review

The instructions say that you should see the maximum whitening/stain removing in 5-7 days. (It will not change the color of your teeth but it will remove stains that have accumulated from coffee drinking, wine, aging, etc). I used it for the full seven days, and I do feel like my teeth are quite a bit brighter. It’s hard to tell exactly how much whiter they are (without those handy shade guides the dentists use) but I am really happy with the way my smile looks after using the system.

You only need to shine the LED light on your teeth (that you’ve put the whitening gel on) for 20-45 minutes, and if you want, you can keep the teeth protectors and gel on for several additional hours. I never did that…I rinsed the gel off and brushed my teeth as soon as the LED time was up, because I started to get that extra saliva in my mouth and I wanted to spit it out.

I did all of the applications in the evening after the kids went to bed. You’re supposed to brush the gel on your teeth with the pen (I just did my front few teeth, the ones you can see when I smile), put the plastic protector over the teeth and under the lips, then turn on the LED light and stick that under your lips over the protector.

The first night, I held the light in my mouth with my hand for 20 minutes and after that, I was ready to take it out. By the third night, I was able to stick it under my lips and walk around wthout using my hands to hold it in, making lunches and getting ready for the next day without it bothering me a bit. And most of those subsequent days, I left it in for the full 45 minutes.

The whole system actually is pretty easy to use. Like I said, it took a day or so to get used to having the light plus the gel in my mouth, but after that, I hardly noticed it (and I’m not exagerrating when I say I’ve always had a pretty bad gag reflex).

Compared to even just a teeth cleaning at the dentist (let alone a professional whitening kit), the price of the system is really reasonable. I didn’t even use an entire gel pen for the week, though the instructions say that you’ll need more.

The only thing difficult about the system was that the LED light was sometimes a little hard to turn off. But, with some hard pressing on the button, it always shut off after I few tries. Nothing I couldn’t deal with.

You can find the LED system, plus other kits at the Smile Brilliant website.

But, I also have a Smile Brilliant LED Teeth Whitening kit (with one gel pen included) to giveaway to a lucky reader! The giveaway will be open for seven days, and it is open to US, UK, AU, and Canadian residents.

Prom Dress Shopping Online

I vividly remember what I wore to both of my high school proms…one dress was actually a bridesmaid’s dress that I’d be wearing that summer in my brother’s wedding, and the other was chosen specifically to accentuate my hair, my eyes, even my date. It sparkled with sequins and was just a tiny bit sultry, being off the shoulder. I felt beautiful, and fancy, and loved every second of choosing the dresses and working my whole look around them.

Now, my daughters and my nieces are getting older and edging their way towards their own proms (though not too quickly, I hope). They also love to get dressed up, fix their hair, paint their nails and show off their inidividuality.

When it comes time to find them prom dresses, we’ll be looking somewhere with a lot of different styles, colors, and perhaps most importantly, price ranges, like JenJenHouse. Prom dress shopping online has come a long, long way.

When it comes to high school, I lean towards more modest dresses, but I also love that they can be fun and a little grown up (just like the high schoolers themselves). But some girls love the strapless styles or shorter hemlines and JenJenHouse has looks for all of those girls (and the approval of their moms).

One of my personal favorites, and one that I can see my oldest niece in, is this A-Line Princess Tulle and Chiffon dress with Sequins. The ocean blue color is gorgeous and the dress itself is classic but modern. It also comes in a variety of other colors to choose from, so you know that the one you get is the perfect shade.

prom dress

What’s more, not only can you choose a standard size, but JenJenHouse does custom sizing as well. So you know that the perfect prom dress your girl has picked out will fit her perfectly! But what I love the most is that there are so many different dresses to choose from that a girl knows she’s going to be one of a kind when she walks in the ballroom for her prom. And, they carry accessories and shoes so you never have to step foot in the mall (if you don’t want to).

Check out the dresses at JenJenHouse, and have fun!

This post is sponsored by Sverve, but my love of online shopping and playing dress-up is all my own.

The Perfect Fit: Top Trench Coat Tips for All Body Types

The trench coat is a must-have for cool days in the spring and fall.  There are many different macs available in a range of colours and styles.  While it is always useful to have a neutral jacket that will match any outfit, some ladies prefer to make a statement with a bold print.  The perfect trench coat is lightweight and will protect you from the wind and rain.  Trench coats have been around since the early 1900s and were most commonly worn by the military.  The trend quickly caught on with civilians and still remains popular today. You can still see hints of the military style roots in the latest mac trends, but there are a variety of looks to choose from to suit your wardrobe.   Not sure which style will suit your body type?  Here are some helpful tips to choose a trench coat that will flatter your unique figure:

Curvy girls can show off their best assets by choosing a fitted mac with an empire waist.  A coat that accentuates the smallest part of your body will make you appear thinner and elongate your figure.  Dark colours will also have a slimming effect.  Keep the length at the knee or shorter, so you can pair your jacket with some skinny jeans or a great pair of knee high boots.  Make sure the belt fits comfortably, or replace it with a different coloured belt to add something extra to your look.  If you have a large chest, avoid a double breasted trench and stick with a more basic top.  You can camouflage larger hips by choose a mac that has an A-line silhouette.  This will look more flattering and be much easier to move around in.  Trench coats look great on curvy girls because they fit close to the body without adding any extra bulk.

Use a fitted trench coat to add some extra curves to a boyish figure.  Look for a coat that is tailored in at the waist, and keep the length around your mid-thigh.  If you are smaller on top, add some volume with a brightly coloured scarf, or select a mac with plenty of detailing on the top.  Look for a jacket that flares out towards the bottom for a fun and feminine look.  If you are wearing a dress underneath, make sure that it matches the jacket and falls below the hemline of the mac.

Petite ladies should stick with a ¾ length mac that doesn’t overwhelm their small frame.  Add some height by wearing leggings and pair of high heeled pumps.  Bright colours or prints will also look great on a small frame.  Avoid long coats that land below the knee, and stick with smaller lapels and pockets.

Tall girls can show off their long legs in a slimming trench coat.  Almost any length will look great on a tall figure, but having some extra height will allow you to pull off a knee-length jacket beautifully.  Stick with neutral colours like black, beige, navy blue and tan.  Offset the solid colour by adding a striped scarf or bold print underneath.

Like any other piece of clothing, the quality of the fabric will determine how your trench coat will wear over time.  Look for a trench is wrinkle resistant and is made from a blend of materials.  Stiffer material will look more structured and hide flaws.  A water resistant material is a great option if you want a trench that will keep you dry on rainy days.

There is no doubt that you will get plenty of use out of your trench coat.  A well fitted mac is a great addition to any wardrobe because it can be dressed up or down, and it is a timeless piece that suits ladies of all ages.  It is practical, versatile, and it will never go out of style.  A trench coat is perfect to wear to work or out for a busy day of shopping.  It is such a great basic piece because it will conform to your personal style.  Just pair it with your favorite scarf, leggings, shoes or boots, and you can take a basic mac from functional to fashionable.   Once you have added a versatile mac to your wardrobe you will be able to put together a classy outfit with a moment’s notice.

MyBumBum Shoes: Making a Girl feel Special

MyBumBum Shoes: Making a Girl feel Special

When I was a little girl, I’d get excited to go shopping with my mom. Not window shopping, but shopping for a specific purpose. As an adult I feel the same way – I only like to shop when I know what I’m shopping for.

My 9-year old daughter, Alijah, is the same way. She’s not interested in going to the store unless she’s looking for something specific. She’ll wear the same clothes and same pair of shoes all year round – cold weather or hot.

Courtney, however, got her love of clothes from someone else, because she certainly didn’t inherit that gene from me. She can shop for days, and even changes outfits two or three times a day. When she’s not changing her clothes she’s repurposing scarves, plastic grocery bags, and other odd items into her newest fashion creation.

But now, as the daughter of a blogger – and one who’s learned to appreciate shopping online versus shopping in person, she gets excited about the knock on the door from the mail or delivery person.

This package was no exception. She got to pick out a pair of sparkly shoes and she was expecting them to arrive within days of her “order”. When they finally came, she was jumping up and down from excitement!

About a week prior Courtney picked out a pair of shoes from bumbums baubles. She chose Lily Mary Jane – Pink Sparkle and even chose which dress she’d wear with them when they came.

I chose to order the shoes in a girl 1 and should have gone with the toddler 13 instead. But, no worries – she’ll definitely grow into them. The shoes are cute, and sparkly, and perfect! They’re totally for girly girls and Courtney was happy to wear them. The only problem we encountered was that we had a hard time attaching the bow to the shoes, which didn’t really make a difference since they’re made to be worn plain anyway. The attachments are cute though and can really make the shoes extra special for your little princess.

Courtney gives them an A+ and was excited to wear them to school during spirit week for dress up day. She was so adorable.
