5 Challenges Of Working from Home

February 25, 2020 Filed Under: Business Tips, Motivation & Productivity, Work at Home Tips

Thinking of working from home? Before you do, consider the challenges of working from home. Working from home is one of the fastest-growing trends in the workplace today.

However, people jump on the bandwagon without considering any drawbacks to working from home. Some people are naturally inclined to work at home.

But, others find it more difficult to make the transition. There are a lot of benefits to working from home. However, these challenges need to be considered before you commit to it.

#1 of Our Challenges of Working from Home

The first challenge is looking for a work from home career that is similar to your current career. Some careers might not be an easy transition over to working from home.

You may need to be willing to change careers entirely. Sales and administrative positions transfer well, as do creative jobs like design and writing.

For those in jobs that can’t make the work at home switch, you’ll have to think carefully about what you want to do when start working at home and start investigating that field.

This is was one of those challenges of working from home that can make or break your decision to take the leap.

Weighing the Costs

Cost is another of our challenges of working from home. Although many mothers start working at home to save on childcare, there are some costs involved.

If you need health insurance, it will have to come out of your pocket instead of being paid by your employers. In the case of freelance work, contracted jobs, and home-based business you will need to pay taxes.

Keep excellent records in order to keep track of your income and expenses, and to fill out your income tax return at the end of the year.

What about the Kids

Working from home with children is not always as easy as it seems. Especially if your children aren’t in school yet, it may be hard to work when they are awake.

Challenges of working from home like this mean changes in your work schedule. You may need to work during naps and at night after your kiddos are in bed. Family members helping take care of your children from time to time can help, a lot.

Yet, the responsibility of your job and childcare will be firmly in your hands. With older children, it is sometimes easier to work from home. Start and maintain a fairly balanced schedule in order to get everything done.

Staying On Track

Work from home moms have to be disciplined and self-motivated to get work done. How does your personality and work style compare up against these challenges of work from home? Do you work better independently or need supervision?

Do you work better around others or by yourself?  There is no one there to make sure that you are still working. And, distractions like the television, Internet and housework can keep you from your work.

Dealing with Loneliness

Isolation is another of the challenges of working from home. Working alone every day can get frustrating and lonely. Make sure you are comfortable spending time alone.

Be prepared with some ways you can combat isolation. Especially if you are prone to being depressed, stay aware of your mood. Working from home alone can compound the issue.

Make sure to spend time with others regularly. Find an activity or hobby you enjoy and gives you a chance to socialize with others.

You may decide that working at home is not right for you after considering these challenges of working from home. But before you give up, remember you aren’t the only who has faced these. Thousands of people deal with these challenges and still have successful work at home careers.

Don’t let these challenges keep you from working from home if that’s what you really want.  Instead, make sure you understand the realities of the work at home lifestyle and have a plan how to face them.
