Herbalife is a global multi-level marketing corporation which develops, markets and sells nutrition supplements, weight management products, as well as personal-care products. Founded in 1980 by Mark Hughes and with a rich history spanning over close to 4 decades, the company has its headquarters in Los Angeles, California, but through its network consisting of more than 3 million independent distributors it manages to reach 94 countries, having 8,000 employees all over the world.
From humble beginnings, with Mark Hughes selling products out of the trunk of his car in 1980, by 1985 the Inc. magazine named it the fastest-growing private company in America, after its sales went from $386 thousand to $423 million in 5 years. Soon after, in 1986, the company was listed on the NASDAQ and became publicly traded. The company continued to grow, expanding its reach by 1988 to Spain, Japan, New Zealand, Mexico and Israel, and reaching 32 countries by 1996. Fast forward to the year 2004, the company had an initial public offering on the New York Stock Exchange netting the owners $1.3 billion.
Giving Back To The Community
In addition to selling nutrition products and promoting a healthy lifestyle, Herbalife distributors also focus on giving back to the community. Enter Dave and Rochelle Byers, distributors and local residents of Coshocton, a small town in Ohio. The small community in Coshocton has been relying on factories for work for several decades, and often times, that line of work requires long days and it is physically taxing. Over time, factory labor takes its toll on the body, and according to a Fair Labor Association study, more than half of factory employees work for 60 hours a week or even more.
Dave and Rochelle Byers were aware of the town’s growing need of healthy alternatives to fast food restaurants and pizza joints. The couple saw the problem as a chance to step in and try to make a difference in the community. The two took on the mission of creating a supportive environment that revolved around lifestyle options that are healthy. As such, Dave established a Herbalife community club entitled Healthy’s, which focuses on a holistic approach when it comes to healthy living.
By inserting the community club into the small town and offering free samples of nutrition products and free fitness classes, Dave and Rochelle Byers realized that the people in Coshocton only needed motivation and support in order to get started. Rochelle noted that they aim to build a relationship with their customers and help them find the thing that makes them happy. In addition, while talking about their goals she also pointed out that they’re trying to help people find their purpose and then break through the barrier that is holding them back.
Helping People Achieve Their Goals
The thing that makes the club’s programs unique is the attention to providing personalized nutrition for every customer as well as offering them support. Unlike standard nutrition plans which are specific to losing weight or gaining muscle, the programs and activities at the Healthy’s community club focus on encouraging people to achieve their personal goals. In turn, this allows for anyone to join, regardless of age or what stage of their journey they are at and enjoy the supportive atmosphere of the club.
Healthy’s offers aloe, teas, and protein shakes, providing the residents of the small town with what they need for a nutritious meal. According to Dave, besides the nutrition products offered by the club, there are various community health activities, making it close to impossible for anyone to have an excuse not to join in and start their journey towards a healthier lifestyle.
