Are you wondering how other busy moms are building their businesses and wrangling the kids?
Here are our top hacks for work at home moms with young kids.
It’s all well and good when a mom claims to be successful working from home with older kids but what about working from home with young kids?
We all know they can require more attention and are more demanding with your time. It can almost seem impossible to be able to juggle them both.
Let’s look at our hacks for work at home moms with younger kids:
1. Schedule time to work when you know they’ll be sleeping
This can sound easy but it’s another thing to actually execute it. I’m sure you’ve been there. You try and get everything done during their day sleep and for whatever reason, they don’t sleep as long as you anticipated.
You end up getting frustrated and feel like it was a fail. I know I’ve been there! (many, many times)
When I saw this pattern happening, again and again, I knew that I needed to change something. My solution to this was to use the time before they woke in the morning or after bed at night. I used the time in the middle of the day for dinner prep, listening to a podcast or catching up on other errands.
2. Organise your work tasks
When you only have a limited amount of time, you need to organise your tasks wisely. That way you can use every little bit of free time you have to do something to move your business in the right direction.
You’d be surprised how much more you can get done when you know exactly what you need to work on when!
This is something that I’ve found other work at home moms really struggle with and it’s why I created the Time Management Freedom course. I help busy moms grow their businesses (and income) by giving them a complete-time management and productivity system.
3. Plan periods of childcare
When I say this, I don’t mean that you have put your children into childcare (of course you can use paid childcare options) but it can be as simple as doing a switch with another mom boss. You have her kids for a few hours and vice versa. This is a really simple way to make sure you’re getting some uninterrupted time to work on your business.
4. Prioritize your business
This one is important.
As a mom, you’ve got a list longer than your leg that you need to get done in a week. It’s easy to have things slip down the list.
Don’t let that happen with your business!
Commit to making it work and communicate that with your partner. Make your vision known for it and make them aware that you’re needing time to work on it.
I remember listening to a podcast a while back (I can’t remember which one) but there was a work at home mom being interviewed. She had built a multi-seven figure business but in its infancy, her partner didn’t support it. Her response to him was ‘you don’t have to support it but just don’t get in my way’. I loved how much she believed in herself and she owned her vision.
5. Automate or delegate household jobs
You can read more about this in this blog post, 9 Ways To Automate Your Life, but start thinking about tasks that you have to do for the household that can be automated.
That might be banking. Or grocery delivery. Or hiring a cleaner.
Whatever you need to be able to free up more time so you can get more done in your business.
6. Declutter your home
If you calculated how much time you spent putting stuff away, you’d be shocked! Every item in your house requires some kind of maintenance, it needs a place to live and you need to look after it. This all takes time.
Start by going through each room and think about every object. If it’s not being used or doesn’t bring you joy then get rid of it. Be ruthless. Having less to look after will give you so much time and space to work in your job or business. Marie Kondo’s world-renowned book, The Life-Changing Magic Of Tidying Up, is amazing to help you get rid of what’s not serving you.
7. Have activities for the kids that don’t require you as much
If you do need to get work done with the kids around, make sure you have activities that you know they can do with minimal supervision.
This, of course, depends on the age of the children but I’ve found playdough, coloring in, laying on the playmat with a mobile above them or setting up something like a train set have worked for me in the past. You know your child and you know what they love to do!
8. Be clear with others on your workdays
Just because you’re working from home, doesn’t mean you have the time to do everyone’s errands, go out for coffee or hang the washing out. You’re there to work and that ‘s what needs to be done.
I suggest you turn off all notifications and go back to your plan for your business and get busy working on it.
I hope those hacks for work at home moms with young kids help you get started and build your business into the profitable business you deserve.
