I often get asked how I get work done as a homeschooling, work at home mom. I’d love to say that it’s always sunshine and rainbows but there are times where I use technology. There are only so many YouTube and other videos that you can use and to be honest, I’m constantly worried about what they’re watching and what will pop up next.
Whilst we’ve been using online learning for the kids for the last few years, this year we’ve relied on it more than ever. And I have to say, we’ve really enjoyed it and found some great programs!
Just so we’re clear, I’m not advocating using technology for the entire day. I try and get work done before they get up and after they go to bed but sometimes, I need to get more work done during the day. This is when I’ll use learning programs for the kids but they’re also free to use them when they want to.
Here are my top tips for online learning for kids that let you get more work done:
1. Use programs that are easy to navigate
When looking for online learning platforms I really need them to be easy to navigate and easy so that the kids can be super self-sufficient. They’re 7 and 3 so it can be hard to find programs for the 3-year-old that aren’t just videos. Having them self-sufficient is an absolute must when you’re a work at home mom and is what truly allows you to get quality work done.
2. Programs that are created by qualified educators
If you’re using online learning for the kids, you want to make sure it’s created by experienced early-learning educators! I think this is a must! By having content created by professionals, you can rest easy knowing that they’re teaching your child with quality material to help them grow and develop.
3. Look for programs that incorporate the STEAM curriculum
I’m a huge supporter of the STEAM curriculum. If you’re not sure, STEAM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics. As a homeschooling mom, I am passionate about all subject areas receiving the same amount of attention and value. Using online programs that use the STEAM curriculum means that the kids can cover the topics that they’re interested in, whether that’s science or art. I’ve found STEAM curriculums to be really well rounded and engaging.
4. Programs that are continuously updated and have content added frequently
When you’re paying for online learning platforms, you want to make sure they’re updating and adding content regularly. This not only keeps the kids engaged but you also can rest assured that there’ll also be something new.
5. Be able to track their progress and activities
To be honest, I didn’t ever think this was something that I really cared too much about but it’s been really helpful to see what they’ve learnt about and how they’re progressing. One of the reasons we don’t send our kids to school is because we’re not big on grades but getting progress reports is great.
Our favorite online learning program for kids
The best online learning platform for kids that I’ve found that covers all of these points has been MarcoPolo Learning. The kids have loved it and have been really engaged. It’s freed up so much time so I can get work done during the day and they’ve learnt so much!
The best thing about it is that both my 3-year-old and 7-year-old love it and can use it themselves! Up until now, I hadn’t found an online learning program that ticked both of those boxes and I’m so happy we’ve found one!
If you want to give MarcoPolo Learning a try, they’re offering a free 7-day trial and then it’s only $9.99/month or $69.99/year which is super affordable!
If you have any other tips on how to get more work done as a work at home mom, pop them in the comments, I’d love to hear them!
