Puppy potty training_ Main things you need to know

Puppy potty training: Main things you need to know

August 2, 2019 Filed Under: Pets

People who don’t have dogs often take them for granted. They tend to see this domesticated, well-behaved pet and they think it’s would be easy to handle one.

However, they don’t understand that it takes a lot of time to properly train these dogs and integrate them with humans.

Like us, they have different characters and tendencies and sometimes they can be a handful. The best way to deal with them is to treat them like small kids: start teaching them when they’re young. In that sense, potty training is probably one of the first things they will learn.

Puppy potty training: Main things you need to know

This training is crucial not only as a way of keeping your home nice and clean but also for creating a bond between you and a pet.

During this period of time you will spend a lot of time together and soon enough, dog will start looking at you with loving eyes.
Here are some tips that will help you with puppy potty training.

It’s all up to you

As you can presume, you’re the one that has to bring the change and train the dog, not the other way around.

Like little kids, dogs will adopt patterns of behavior or become unruly if you allow them to. Since the young age puppies look at us as caretakers and they will follow our lead. So basically, for your dog to be disciplined, you also have to be.

This also means that you need to have lots of consistency in your behavior.

Pottying is like most other things in life: it is mostly a routine. By going out at the same time each day, your dog is getting used not only to these walks but having a walk at precisely the same time each and every day. In a short amount of time, the dog will get used to this and won’t even think of going wee inside of your home.

Use love and treats

We these two things you can teach a dog to do almost anything. Needless to say, some dogs will do everything for a treat so make the best out of it. Even if it’s just petting, dog will likely take it and be motivated by it (as long as you remain consistent and provide encouragement when it’s needed).

Some people have a wrong impression that they have to rule with an iron fist. This isn’t really true with pups. Have in mind that like kids, puppies are susceptible to impressions and it is easy to sway them to your will.

There is no need to yell, be aggressive or god forbid punish a dog in anyway. Instead, it is much better if you provide positive feedback and each time a dog potties outside of the house, show it that you appreciate this.

Consider the diet

Diet is another important aspect of potty training. By having an imbalanced diet or not providing food at the same time, it can be really hard figuring out when your puppy has to potty.

As you will likely have walks each day at the same time, this will make it harder for puppy. Sometimes, it will have an accident due to these dietary inconsistencies. As a result, it will start developing a habit that it’s ok to potty at home.

You need to make sure that a puppy creates a connection between going outside and relieving itself and the best way to do this is by being able to time its bowel movements properly.

Conclusion

There isn’t much to potty training. In fact, it is more of a habit of developing than training per se. The majority of the work will be done through persistence and discipline.

If you’re able to give a good example and predict dog’s behavior, it will be a rather straightforward process. If accidents happen even after housetraining the pooch, it’s real easy to remove the stains and odors.
