Starting an online business can feel overwhelming. When I first began, I wasn’t sure if making money online was even possible. It seemed like a distant dream, and I couldn’t figure out how others were doing it. I saw people making money online—some making a lot—but it was all so unclear to me.
Everything changed for me on a trip to Turkey, where I met a real-life blogger (an actual human being who was making really good money!). She was traveling on a press trip and making money while doing it! The idea that she could travel and still earn an income blew my mind. That’s when I realized it could be possible for me too.
When I got home, I dove headfirst into the blogging world and set up my very first blog. To be honest, it was a bit of a hot mess, but the important thing is that I started. As my blog grew, I began to make a little bit of money. That small success was a huge motivator.
There’s one thing someone said to me that has stuck with me ever since:
“If you can make a dollar online, you can make ten. If you can make ten, you can make a hundred. And if you can make a hundred, you can make a thousand.”
This simple truth continues to motivate me today.
So, What Would I Do If I Was Starting From Scratch?
If I had to start all over again from zero, with very little money to invest, I’d go back to the basics. Here’s what I would do step by step:
- Start a Blog
Blogging might not be the fastest way to make money online, but it’s incredibly versatile. With a blog, you can tap into multiple income streams, including affiliate marketing, selling digital products, earning ad revenue, or even securing sponsored posts. - Focus on Affiliate Marketing Early
From the very beginning, I would dive into affiliate marketing. It’s one of the easiest ways to monetize a blog without having to create your own products right away. The key is to recommend products and services you believe in and that align with your niche. Affiliate marketing is still one of my favorite ways to make money. - Use Pinterest to Drive Traffic
Pinterest is an amazing tool for generating traffic to your blog. If I were starting over, I’d learn everything I could about Pinterest and use it as my primary strategy to drive visitors to my content. - Keep It Simple and Consistent
I wouldn’t try to overcomplicate things. For a year, I would focus solely on creating quality content, growing my audience, and refining my strategy. It’s all about staying consistent and patient. - Start an Email List Early
One thing I’d make sure to do from the beginning is to start an email list. Having a direct line to your audience is essential for growing your business and eventually selling your own products. For beginners, I’d recommend using a tool like Flodesk to get started. It’s user-friendly and ideal for building your list from scratch. - Create a Low-Ticket Product Once You Have an Audience
Once I have a better understanding of what my audience resonates with, especially through affiliate marketing, I’d move on to creating my own digital product. Starting with a low-ticket item allows you to test the waters and provide something of value without overwhelming your audience. - Stay Focused and Prioritize Learning
In those early stages, my main priority would be to focus on creating high-quality content and constantly learning. I’d dive deep into how to optimize my Pinterest strategy and improve my blog to reach more people.
